Behavior Support Services for Colorado Adults with I/DD

In-home behavior supports

  • The Basic and Basic Plus curriculums are developed for a broad audience of caregivers and community members interested in learning to manage a crisis. Prevention and verbal de-escalation strategies are taught in-depth. Basic Plus adds personal safety techniques such as releasing a grab and redirecting a strike.

  • The practitioner curriculums build on each other (each level INCLUDES the level before). Practitioners learn the cycle of crisis, decision-making strategies, prevention strategies and de-escalation strategies, personal safety, and physical transportation. Practitioner 1 adds vertical immobilization. Practitioner 2 (S) adds a supine (face down) horizontal immobilization.

*Practitioner courses are very active. Participants will learn and practice skills with other participants. Participants will be required to kneel, bend, twist, and be physically active for 30 minutes at a time. Some accommodations can be made, but participants MUST be able to perform the basic techniques the required number of times for certification. Participation by individuals who are pregnant is not recommended, please discuss any questions or concern with instructor.

  • All PCM practitioners must complete a recertification class on a yearly basis in order to maintain their certification.

Professional Crisis Management

Professional Crisis Management consists of a combination of strategies and safety techniques, used to ensure safety, preserve dignity, and effectively support others during an emotional or behavioral crisis. Developed for caregivers across a multitude of settings, PCM can greatly increase safety of students, residents, program participants, staff, caregivers, teachers, and families of children, teens, and people (children through adults) with special needs. PCM builds on Applies Behavior Analysis, psychology, and physiology to maintain positive relationships and learning through a crisis.
